The Feminist Factory of Sustainable Solutions

The Feminist Factory of Sustainable Solutions aims to provide political, social and environmental solutions to end period poverty. This is achieved through the creation of period pants, a sustainable menstrual product. An equally environmentally sustainable building accompanies this, along with an equally socially sustainable work environment.

A net zero building was achieved through materiality choices based on cradle to cradle approaches. Contrary to the typically used cradle to grave design, cradle to cradle uses materials and then re-uses them to create a new product. This promotes a circular economy that helps to mitigate climate change. Furthermore, fabric-first principles, active strategies and passive strategies were implemented to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the building.

The programme is designed with the intent to reinvent the orthodox work environment. This is achieved through: the main spaces having visual connections to nature, the provision of spaces for users to relax and de-stress and a healthy cafe to ensure users are nourished on the inside as well as the outside. Social sustainability is further achieved through circular economies promoting growth and social equity. Secure full-time employment generated by the Factory is dedicated to the local community. Bespoke furniture aids the inclusivity of the Factory. Ergonomically designed tables and clothing rails are implemented to account for all users.
