Architecture is an academically demanding course and might not feel like the most familiar course to undertake as there is a large transition to a studio-based environment. It is essential to have access to reliable support systems to guide you every step of the way. In Manchester School of Architecture (MSA), the support network is evident, and the MSA Student Hub is simply one contact away from professional support and academic services. The MSA Student Hub is the perfect assistant to your student life in MSA, providing reassurance and resources when navigating your student journey.

The MSA Student Hub is reachable via its own website platform with a clear directory of key information such as course essentials, assessments, fees, wellbeing support, study support, and careers services etc. The online platform enables students to connect directly with support staff, alongside a dedicated phone line for urgent queries during their time here. Having this access is extremely useful during submission periods or when technical questions arise under time pressure. The online platform is also easy to navigate and has comprehensive FAQs that allow students to quickly find answers to common queries. The dual support of in-person and online assistance allows students to approach their academic year with greater confidence. I find the dual support especially useful as it accommodates different comfort levels. Students are given the choice to communicate personally with a member of support staff or resolve queries through the online platform. To summarise, the MSA Student Hub serves as a support pillar for students seeking assistance or general enquiries throughout their time at university.

Beyond the support provided by the Student Hub, my personal favourite aspect of studying at MSA is the wide range of career support they provide throughout my academic and prospective professional journey. At the end of each semester, MSA organises dedicated events to prepare students for future careers and gain exposure to the industry during “Future Me Week”. This initiative is designed to help students prepare for the transition between university and future careers. The events range from networking sessions and workshops to skill-building opportunities, particularly in third year. They also prompt you to reflect on what you want to do and what skills you wish to learn. Essentially, it’s all about focusing on your growth. These events are crucial for architecture students entering a competitive industry and are especially useful when you are a third-year student. They also help build confidence over time after attending each session as you hone your practical and conversational skills.

Throughout the year, there are guest speakers organised by MSA who provide valuable insight into the real-life industry. One memorable guest speaker who was invited was Peter Cook. After his lecture, I was very amazed by his work, and it gave me a new outlook on approaching architecture. Hearing directly from real-life practitioners really helps bridge the gap between studies and application to professional practice. It also reinforces the importance of our education and provides us with a sense of relevance from our studio work to broader industry realities.

Overall, as an existing student, I am grateful for the support available at the Manchester School of Architecture and the MSA Student Hub, which extends beyond just education and includes constant outreach and support for future careers as well.
