Living in Manchester has given me the perfect balance of city life, green spaces, great food, and easy access to nature. It’s a city that feels busy and exciting when you want it to be, but it also offers plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy the outdoors.
One of my favourite things about Manchester is the abundance of green space. I spend a lot of time in Platt Fields Park, which is one of the city’s most popular parks. Whether it’s going for a walk around the lake, sitting outside with a book, or meeting friends on a sunny afternoon, it’s a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Nearby, Birchfields Park is another favourite. It’s smaller and quieter, making it perfect for a relaxed stroll or a quick break outdoors during the week.
Manchester’s canals are another hidden gem. I particularly enjoy walking along the waterways around Ancoats and Castlefield. The combination of historic industrial architecture, modern apartments, and peaceful paths creates a unique atmosphere that feels very different from the busy shopping streets nearby. These canal walks are especially enjoyable in the evening when the city lights reflect on the water.
One of the biggest advantages of living in Manchester is how easy it is to access the countryside. Thanks to the excellent rail connections, I can hop on a train and be in the Peak District National Park in under an hour. This makes spontaneous day trips incredibly convenient. Whether it’s hiking through rolling hills, exploring picturesque villages, or enjoying stunning viewpoints, the Peak District offers some of the best outdoor experiences in the UK. Having such beautiful landscapes so close to the city is something I never take for granted.
The social side of Manchester is equally appealing. There is always something happening, whether it’s live music, sports, or cultural events. One of my favourite venues is Blues Kitchen Manchester, which combines great food with live jazz and blues performances. It’s a fantastic place to spend an evening with friends. Beyond that, I enjoy playing pool and basketball whenever I get the chance, and Manchester has plenty of facilities and courts where people can meet and play. A lot of my free time is also spent watching films with friends, whether that’s at the cinema or hosting movie nights at home.
Food is another reason I love living in Manchester. The city’s diversity is reflected in its incredible range of restaurants and cuisines. Manchester Chinatown is one of my go-to destinations for authentic East Asian food, while Curry Mile offers an amazing selection of South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine and has become a staple of Manchester’s food scene. What I enjoy most is that there is always something new to try. Whether I’m craving comfort meals or looking to explore a completely different cuisine, Manchester never disappoints.
Overall, life in Manchester offers the best of both worlds: a vibrant student city atmosphere combined with easy access to nature, a welcoming social scene, and an endless variety of food. It’s a place where there is always something to do, somewhere new to explore, and another great meal waiting around the corner.
