A Campus For All
The project is about monument, a new monument as a starting point for the new planned Garden Village in Carlisle, Cumbria. After investigating the site and on the larger scale Cumbria, I highlighted that the economic and higher education are weak and I believe are also interlinked. The higher education provided are stuck with the traditional local industries and provide little novel subjects and specialties such as tech, creative or digital.
I proposed a mixed-use campus for a new future-focused department for University of Cumbria. The campus will serve both the student and public as well as incorporating an office space for industry-academia cooperation which is a strength in Cumbria’s system.
The design is tasked to be monumental, welcoming, and effective. I addressed that with the play between the materials and scale. The final design includes a garden, a library, a university section, and an office section. They work together to function as a central community hub and also as a symbol of regional identity and hope for future prosperity.
