A Glimpse of Hope
Persistent suicide rates in Carlisle, Cumbria, particularly among middle aged men, reveal the urgent need for spaces that support the reconnection with life itself. A Glimpse of Hope is designed to function as a transitional buffer between crisis and stability, centred around nature-based interventions and the restoration of purpose and identity. The project combines walk-in community support, botanical gardens and a small residential programme for eight men, creating a safe and personal environment for recovery. Through gardening, vegetation growth, kitchen work and active recreation, users are encouraged to rebuild identity, while multi-sensory engagement through the integration of the 5 senses strengthens the connection with both nature and the surrounding community. The facility serves as a monument to mental wellbeing through the geometrical expression of floor plans, crafting experiential pathways and existing as a visible symbol of hope, renewal and human resilience within Cumbria.
