A Common Playground

A Common Playground is a utopia; a megastructure of play that reimagines the typical community centre as a space for encounter and collective transformation. Developed in response to the social fragmentation and rising racial tension in Moston, Northeast Manchester, the project explores the potential for architecture to be able to reconfigure political belief and social relationships through joy, movement, and collective participation, portraying architecture not as a static object but as an active social framework where unlikely encounters, shared rituals, and communal joy can flourish. Its visual language intentionally amplifies optimism, silliness, and participation as tools for imagining alternative futures.

The utopian structure transforms the ritual of gathering, as observed within a neighbourhood pub which presented discriminatory behaviour towards the immigrant population, into an opportunity for unification. Dance, play, silliness, freedom – these are the things that will connect even the most unlikely individuals; and this is what the matrix of colourful steel columns and beams amplifies through its inclusive and participatory design strategy. 

A plug-in philosophy allows the megastructure to be continually reconfigured, built by community members themselves to inspire a sense of shared ownership and pride over the neighbourhood. A Common Playground is a space where difference is celebrated, not homogenised, and it is through its whacky, colourful, and bold personality that will enable this transformation to occur in Moston and beyond…
