Continuity in Crewe
Continuity in Crewe reimagines the heritage centre as a civic and cultural catalyst that aims to reconnect the town’s declining and disconnected community with its collective pride, identity and history. Drawing inspiration from urban heritage artefacts and local craftsmanship, the proposal moves away from interpreting heritage as something static, but rather as a dynamic and evolving narrative embedded within the everyday fabric of the town. Through architectural intervention, the project seeks to bridge and strengthen the relationship between people and place by celebrating the industrial, cultural and communal heritage of Crewe.
My proposal aims to restore a sense of place attachment and belonging, while also re-establishing heritage as a key player within the town’s future identity, by fostering spaces that encourage interaction and engagement with the past. The concept behind the tower envisions this, where it seeks to revive Crewe’s Big Bill, which once stood within the town centre as a symbol of local pride. The tower becomes a contemporary re-imagination of Big Bill, while also serving as a key landmark within Crewe, that aims to restore civic pride, cultural identity and social development amongst the population.
Further, the ethos this year within the atelier, is ‘Make, Do & Mend’, which advocates for creative ways of utilising existing resources to promote a sustainable future. The construction sequence embodies this ethos, where sustainability, driven by the use of mass timber construction, and cultural continuity shape the structural design of the gallery. The structure also establishes a strong connection to the vernacular architecture of Crewe, referencing the town’s industrial and historic fabric. This is juxtaposed through a translucent polycarbonate facade that creates a dynamic and changing exterior, that reveals faint silhouettes and movements of the visitors circulating throughout the gallery, transforming the building into a living expression of activity, memory and community.
