Park of Remembrance

This thesis investigates how architecture can facilitate emotional transformation in the context of death, with a focus on guiding individuals through grief toward healing and reflection. Centred on the design of a sustainable crematorium in Crewe, the project explores how spatial qualities and atmosphere can support emotional transitions, fostering a deeper cultural acceptance of death. By weaving memorial and cremation spaces into the urban fabric, the design aims to make these environments more accessible, inclusive, and integrated into daily life. Challenging the common perception of crematoria as places of sorrow, this work proposes an “architecture of solace”—a space that supports remembrance, emotional well-being, and cross-cultural reflection. Ultimately, it seeks to reframe death not as an end, but as a meaningful part of life’s continuum, promoting the idea of equality between life and death.
