Hautausmaa: The Burial Ground

The development and uptake of AI across the globe, stretches the already thin  global energy supply with countries turning to nuclear energy to bolster their supply.  65 reactors worldwide are scheduled to be commissioned and constructed with each of them generating untold amounts of radioactive matter. The Cumbrian town of Whitehaven is sign posted to host the UK’s flagship Deep Geological Repository (DGR).  Nuclear waste is transported from Sellafield to the facility and is transported1000m below the ground in  copper canisters. The facility will be in use for 100-200 years before the tunnels are sealed up to surface level with only the nuclear material remaining underground.

With humanity wiped off the face of the earth, how do we protect future species from the danger that lies beneath? A constant reminder looms over the site as a warning to those who dare to engage and investigate. Opportunities for nature to reclaim its territory. Open mosaic habitats flourish in the remains. Covering the scars on the landscape and masking the sins.

A 1000 year reminder of humanities failures.  A 1000 year warning to those who may follow in our footsteps.
