I am an architect and educator with over 20 years of experience in both teaching and professional practice. As a practitioner, my interests focus on modular systems, with an emphasis on prefabricated and adaptable components that bring flexibility, efficiency, and scalability to design. I have applied these systems in various contexts, ranging from public art installations to bespoke architectural solutions for residential and commercial projects. My design approach centres around sustainable practices and innovative uses of standard materials to create spaces that respond to evolving needs and environments. I believe in shaping architecture through cross-disciplinary collaboration to broaden our design perspective. As the founder of RLAD 2010. I integrate my academic insights with hands-on professional experience, working on private commissions and collaborating on international projects.
My teaching approach is rooted in both practice and research, promoting a critical and creative exploration of architectural ideas that bridge theory and practice. I encourage students to challenge conventions and explore the potential of modular design in developing responsive architecture.
This resulted in a competition-winning entry for the T-house, a temporary pavilion designed to celebrate cultural diversity in Birmingham. The pavilion was prefabricated using 3m x 4m x 5m cross-laminated timber panels. I was also one of the principal designers in a collaborative team shortlisted to design global retail spaces for Puma, utilising interchangeable components to create adaptive environments.
Over the years, I have taught at the Birmingham School of Architecture and the Sheffield School of Architecture. I also served as Course Leader for Interior Architecture and Design at Sheffield Hallam University, followed by a role as Head of Area overseeing Interior Architecture and Design, Jewellery, Product Design, and Professional Packaging Design at Sheffield Hallam University. During my tenure as Head of Area, I developed cross-collaborative projects between the suite of 3D courses. Enabling students from Jewellery, Interior, and Product Design to work on common projects centred around thematic briefs. Providing opportunities for staff to contribute across disciplines within the subject group.
I have had the opportunity to act has External Examiner at three different universities in the UK, which has bordered my understanding of pedagogy, whilst contributing with my experience as an educator. I have undertaken RIBA regional jury panel member for the Northeast in Sheffield, I was trustee for Interior Educators from 2019 – 2021 and in 2016, I was one of principal leads for coordinating the architectural education element at the Colombo Art’s Biennale in Sri Lanka.
