A Curriculum for the Future
We are committed to innovation in teaching and learning on sustainability. Our curriculum reflects the latest research and pedagogical practices in design studio, sustainable technologies, and the architectural humanities. Our intention is to empower and inform students to create imaginative, socially responsible, and sustainable responses for people and planet.
Embedding Sustainability Across Our Programmes
Programme changes for the BA and MArch have cemented the integration of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), guided by UNESCO’s Eight Key Competencies for Sustainability. This aligns with MMU’s 2022–2026 Leadership in Sustainability strategy and the direction of our Professional Statutory and Regulatory Bodies (PSRBs). All students have access to MMU’s award winning Carbon Literacy training programme.
Leading with Adaptive Reuse
Our ateliers are developing strong, critical responses to the climate and biodiversity emergency. A key focus is on building reuse with our dedicated MA in Architecture and Adaptive Reuse, our MArch 1 students engage in adaptive reuse projects, whilst BA2 studio has moved to a reuse project.
Showcasing Natural Materials
Now in its third year, our Natural Materials exhibition gives students hands-on experience with plant- and bio-based materials, encouraging sustainable design thinking.
Student-Led Innovation
Our students continue to innovate and lead discussions on the future for built environment design that addresses the climate and biodiversity emergencies. Two of our MArch students, Dulcie Burchill and George Cox, took part in the School of Collectively Building (Austria) course on Climate Responsive Design for Flooding Cities – both were successful following a competitive process.
