Cascade: Mayfield
Mayfield today is defined by transition, serving as a grey, utilitarian corridor for Manchester Piccadilly Station commuters. Cascade: Mayfield re-imagines this landscape, transforming Manchester’s rainfall from an inconvenience into a shared cultural asset and a catalyst for civic ritual.
Operating from macro-urban water networks down to micro-sensory details, the project integrates within the historic Manchester Piccadilly viaduct to mediate climate, culture, and community. Harvested rainwater is drawn into the heart of the site to power a circular economy of production, directly supporting local artisans in brewing, coffee roasting, textile making and pottery.
The design functions as an interactive landscape, translating the movement of the natural water cycle into a rich acoustic, and tactile experience. Leaky roof gutters, rain chains, and gabion water walls celebrate the sensory qualities of rain, slowing temporal rhythms to invite the community to pause and gather. Constructed from salvaged heritage brick and steel, the scheme seamlessly bridges Mayfield’s industrial past with a climate-resilient, community driven future.
Cascade: Mayfield activates a permanent state of change, transforming traditionally utilitarian infrastructure into an immersive site of wonder, shared identity, and sustainable urban theatre.
