The InBetween

The Inbetween is a community wellbeing hub located within Old Trafford that explores how architecture can support care, healing and social connection through a therapeutic and socially responsive design approach. The project responds to issues of isolation, emotional wellbeing and community fragmentation by creating a safe and welcoming environment centred around collective support, cultural identity and everyday interaction.

The proposal combines a range of programmes including counselling spaces, communal kitchens, study areas, workshop spaces, emergency accommodation and greenhouse growing facilities. Particular attention has been given to creating spaces that feel approachable and non-institutional through the use of natural materials, daylight and views towards landscaped areas.

A key aspect of the project is the integration of henna as a medium for healing, cultural expression and community engagement. Henna growing, processing and educational activities are incorporated throughout the proposal, creating opportunities for skill sharing, social interaction and cultural connection. This allows the building to support both practical and emotional forms of care whilst reinforcing a strong sense of identity within the community.

Environmental and technical strategies play an important role within the design. The proposal utilises a glulam and CLT structural system alongside passive environmental measures including timber solar shading, natural ventilation, rainwater collection and biodiversity focused landscaping. These strategies aim to improve environmental performance whilst contributing to the overall wellbeing of users through a healthier and more comfortable internal environment.

Through a combination of therapeutic spaces, cultural programmes and environmentally responsive design, the project proposes a holistic approach to care that places human experience at the centre of the architectural response.
