Do You Care?
In rapidly changing Mayfield, movement and efficiency increasingly shape everyday life. As people commute, work, and pass through the area, many spaces become places of passage rather than places to pause. While regeneration continues to transform the district, opportunities for comfort, connection, and everyday care can often feel overlooked.
The project responds to these conditions by exploring how care can become a visible and active part of urban life. Rather than creating a destination defined by a single function, a diner, café, convenience store, and communal lounge are brought together to support a variety of daily routines. The proposal seeks to accommodate moments of rest, social interaction, informal work, and everyday occupation within a welcoming and accessible environment.
Perforated screens, covered thresholds, and flexible seating shape an atmosphere that balances openness with shelter. Light, weather, and patterns of occupation influence the experience of the space throughout the day, creating an environment that adapts to changing needs while remaining grounded in everyday use.
The project is driven by an interest in how places can foster a sense of care and belonging within rapidly evolving urban environments. By giving value to ordinary moments and everyday encounters, it proposes an alternative approach to regeneration, one that prioritises human experience alongside growth and change.
