South Zhejiang Aquatic Market Renovation

I have chosen a seafood market located in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China, built in 1996. The building embodies architectural characteristics of the millennium era in China, with its rectangular form clad in white ceramic tiles and blue glass. Its distinctive spring-like structure, designed for transportation purposes, further highlights its preservation value.

The town where it stands was historically renowned for its fishing industry over the past centuries. However, the once-thriving fishing scenes have gradually faded into memory. Today, this building remains as one of the few physical testaments to that era.

Based on research into the needs of its current users and its operational conditions, the project proposes to retain and optimize the existing business environment for shop owners while also accommodating fishermen’s needs for preparing equipment before going out to sea. At the same time, a new dining function will be introduced to cater to the growing residential communities nearby.

Guided by this design approach, new courtyard corridors are integrated to improve circulation among different user groups, while the rooftop is enhanced as a focal point to attract activity and enrich the overall spatial experience.
