Fabrication of Light

“Fabrication of Light” ethos is built around the interplay between light and space. The design seeks to transform light into a tangible element that users can interact with. Simultaneously, light is used to shape the atmospheric quality of the interior spaces and to weave a cohesive narrative that connects them all.

To express light’s fluidity and intangibility, the structure adopts an irregular, circular form inspired by Richard Serra’s work, which blurs the line between sculpture and architecture. While the form is visually expressive, it is shaped by the functional layout to ensure interior usability. The façade complements rather than disrupts the building’s activities, with form and function evolving together.

Besides, aesthetically, the proposal also utilizes the natural lighting plays an integral role in the structure’s sustainability scheme. The project utilises the sun for natural light and heating to lower the building’s energy consumption and thus its carbon footprint.

Overall, the proposal aims to introduce a new fabrication space within Rochdale’s growing industrial zone while avoiding a dull or monotonous atmosphere. The design explores the qualities of light—its aesthetic, emotional, and environmental potential—and integrates these insights to create distinctive, engaging spaces. Light becomes both a functional and poetic element, shaping an environment that is visually rich, sustainable, and architecturally meaningful.
