Escapism To The Collective
Escapism to The Collective has been my BA3 theme, and it represents the act of creating and designing unconventional architecture that allows marginalized groups to escape any negative realities or circumstances that may arise. This was consistent with my &rchitecture Atelier, where we were strongly encouraged to think outside the box and experiment with user-centered design in unconventional ways.
Zoom in: Cassius, a character from a movie. Cassius was an individual student in Studio 3.1 who, because of his low socioeconomic status and lack of funding, had to work long hours to pay for his university education. In studio 3.2, Cassius became The Collective, a group of students who faced similar issues and needed a sanctuary. My design inspiration has always been Cassius’ and the Collective's minds, so I used the concepts of warpness, distortion, and fantasy to create a student hub with a time-banking system where they can eat, relax, sleep, study, and, most importantly, feel at home. The time banking system is there to encourage building communities and leaning on each other, as well as developing their skills in trade of essentials that they would otherwise have to buy.
Zoom out: Who am I? I am an architecture graduate with a strong interest in residential architecture because I enjoy emotive design and making clients feel safe and heard in their private space, which is typically their home. While I enjoy commercial design (my final studio design is a hybrid commercial and residential hub), I prefer larger firms that work on a variety of projects and specialize in residential architecture. I'm excited to begin my architectural journey, but more importantly, I want my trademark of emotive design to be imprinted on a society that deserves to have its voices heard.
