Hewn By Hand

Throughout my architectural studies, I have strived to design sensitively to communities and impacts on users. During my time in practice, I have broadened my understanding of inclusive and environmentally conscious design of medical practices that can be transferred to other typologies. I have further developed a passion for sustainable design, particularly in the reuse of existing buildings with the intention to preserve heritage, consider material selection, and innovative construction methods. I aim to expand my knowledge on this and design future projects to rejuvenate community connections.

For my thesis project, Hewn By Hand, is an exploration on post-industrial town revitalisation, using the principles of adaptive reuse for unused buildings. The proposal consists of the reuse of the structural frame of an office building built in the 1960s, which will host a wood workshop and studios to reintroduce craftsmanship back into Crewe. With the additional use of teaching spaces and a public cafe, the people of Crewe can immerse themselves in the towns history with a hands on approach.

The project also includes the retrofit of terrace building on the active Market Street of the town centre. This is the public face of the overall Hewn By Hand network, displaying the crafts work created by the people of the town and displayed to inspire.
