Harbour Gateway
Harbour Gateway aims to regenerate the High Street of Whitehaven, Cumbria. This involves an incubation marketplace that encourages small businesses to gain their footing in a supportive environment before eventually moving to a vacant shop lot on the High Street. A direct path from the town centre has been proposed to improve the connectivity towards the harbour, hopefully increasing the amount of visitors at the harbour: creating a gateway to the harbour. The goal of this project is to transport economic regeneration to the town of Whitehaven.
Since Whitehaven is town rich with history, this project also pays homage to the existing heritage of the harbour through the facade retention of the Turkish Baths. Traces of the Turkish Baths can be found once visitors have entered through the original doors, adding a touch of character to the modern lobby space. The short-term stalls populate the main courtyard and terrace spaces of the market, allowing visitors to navigate the space freely, simultaneously enjoying the views of the harbour via the permeable design. Due to the design of the market stalls, both the courtyard and the terrace spaces are highly adaptable and can be used for festivals that frequent the town.
