ECO-SPHERE

My project is an Innovation Factory for Natural Materials, located in Atom Valley, Rochdale, UK. It brings together research, production, education, and community to explore the development and application of bio-based and sustainable materials in furniture and interior architecture. The facility includes a materials laboratory, flexible co-working spaces, a light industrial factory, cafeteria and a public auditorium for lectures, performances, and community events.

The origin of the design was inspired by the preserved natural landscape of the assigned site. To follow the client’s and atelier’s sustainable and inclusive ethos, the concept is rooted from first principle of the collaboration between humans and nature to create a joint improved living environment. This led into an investigation of geometry/symmetry found in nature to influence the building’s programmatic concept and physical aspects. The Fibonacci sequence informed all design decisions for the spatial modifier then adapted for the final building to improve the programmatic organisation, a reflection of nature’s technique in order to survive climate change. This philosophy is carried through all design decisions with a strong emphasis on environmental performance. The architecture prioritises natural material expression, passive design strategies, and a low-carbon construction ethos. Key materials include structural glulam timber and larch grid shell roof.

The building acts not only as a functional workspace but also as an educational and civic landmark. It is publicly accessible to encourage learning, interaction, and environmental awareness through its landscaped surroundings, outdoor learning zones, and biodiversity corridors. Inclusivity is embedded in the design through access, adaptability, amenities and multi-sensory engagement strategies.
