Cleator Crossings
Cleator Crossings is a community-led transport hub based at Cleator Mill, on the edge of the Lake District. It rethinks how people move through rural areas like West Cumbria, places where car dependency is high, public transport is limited, and walking or cycling isn’t always easy, especially for older residents.
Rather than focusing on speed or efficiency, the project encourages a slower, more mindful way of travelling. It supports everyday active travel, like walking, cycling, or using e-bikes, and creates a space that feels welcoming to all, whether you're commuting, exploring, or just taking a break.
The site brings together practical and social elements: a bike school, repair shop, sports store, flexible rest spaces, and a small market where locals can sell products. It’s about supporting the community not just through mobility, but by creating opportunities for connection, health, and local enterprise. The design also pays close attention to the surrounding environment, responding to the nearby river, wildlife, and the changing needs of both residents and visitors.
