Beyond Visibility - An alternative to Manchesters Gay Village for queer inclusion.
Beyond Visibility is a bold reimagining of queer space in Manchester—an inclusive alternative to the Gay Village, located on Richmond Street. Developed alongside the Canal Street, the project centres marginalized voices while drawing inspiration from the rich history of queer cruising culture and community resilience.
The masterplan transforms Richmond Street into a series of interconnected zones tailored to diverse queer experiences: dark rooms, sober spaces, galleries, drug testing facilities, cruising areas, and a multi-use event venue. Each space is designed with its own distinct atmosphere—its own vibe—carefully shaped through architecture, material, and spatial layout. From intimate and shadowy to open and celebratory, the design invites a range of emotional and social experiences, reflecting the spectrum of queer identity.
At the heart of the proposal is a purpose-built public toilet—the only place of WC facilities across all four sites. This deliberate move makes movement through the space meaningful. Finding the toilet becomes part of a shared, exploratory journey that echoes the rituals of gay cruising culture—fostering interaction, curiosity, and connection.
Beyond Visibility is more than an urban redevelopment—it is a statement of presence. It challenges norms, honours radical queer histories, and imagines a future where public space welcomes difference. Through architectural intention and cultural awareness, it transforms the everyday into an experience of belonging.
