Creative Souls
This project is based on the principle of skill development without societal judgement. It follows the creative journey of a Black woman as she works her way to success in an industry that frequently overlooks or undervalues both creativity and people of colour.
Too often, artistic careers are considered as insignificant, particularly for underprivileged populations. The decision to pursue a career in art, craft, or design may be viewed as unviable or meaningless. This project contradicts that perception. It creates a space for creative souls to hone their skills, pursue their dreams, and build long-term careers in the creative industries.
The program focusses on clay sculpting not only as an art form, but also as a tool for empowerment and entrepreneurship. Personal expression through clothes, hair, and identity are examples of creativity in this context, in addition to constructing things with your hands. People of colour have frequently encountered discrimination in workplaces based on how they style their hair or present themselves. This community intentionally fights that bias, celebrating the freedom of self-expression in all forms.
The design also incorporates a cultural café, which serves as a hub for connection, storytelling, and visibility. Located in Sheffield, a city with a rich but underappreciated diversity, the café presents a rotating weekly menu representing several nationalities. This means that even people who are not directly involved in sculpting clay can participate in the project's spirit, interact with others, and help elevate cultures that are frequently overlooked in public life.
Whether you want to start a creative business, attend a clay sculpting workshop, or simply feel seen, this space is here to assist, elevate, and empower!
