E[ND]vironment

The E[ND]vironment is an environmental conservation and education centre focused on rewilding and ecological improvement through interactive education on the Cornish coast.

The concept of this design came from analysis into the fragile microclimate of the Cornish coastline combined with my research into posthuman architecture principles. Placing the needs of the surrounding wildlife equal to that of the proposed human occupants prompted a radical, environmentally conscious design principle that prioritised function over form to create a design that would degrade as its function (environmental education) was needed less, boosting and facilitating an improved local ecology.

The thinking behind this design was to create a tool for environmental education that also acted as the façade for my building. The wall components are made of local, natural, materials that have been designed to degrade gradually creating a layered and intricately textured wall detail that visualises and reflects the current state of the surrounding ecosystem at a scale that’s more clearly for human occupants.
