Hard Graft
The journey of this thesis project started with my own positionality (I have a geology background and have then changed paths into landscape architecture) which informed the social issue of gender disparity, the project developed this social issue through the site of a local working quarry. After visiting the quarry the project changed direction from designing a workspace to taking the opportunity to redesign the post-quarry restoration plan as the current plan is flawed. Using the key theory of eco-feminism, this thesis has developed a new restoration plan with the three Global Commons (environmental, economic and social value) at the forefront of this design. Using the methodology of time, this project used the artistic methods of collage, illustration and model making to assess how the quarry would evolve over 100 years from 2025 to 2125. The thesis concludes with a detailed landscape architecture design for a key area of the site which enhances biodiversity and encourages the surrounding woodland to reclaim this quarry.
