Old Factory, New Qimen Grounds

The project in Qimen, Anhui Province, transforms an abandoned porcelain factory through adaptive reuse of industrial heritage. Once a key industrial site, the area had been left idle due to economic shifts. The design pursues spatial and functional regeneration, revitalizing the site to promote local economic growth while embedding new cultural and social value. It seeks not only to attract diverse groups but also to continue and reinterpret Chinese traditions, linking historical memory with contemporary life.

The proposal emphasizes contextual response, drawing on Huizhou architecture with elements such as whitewashed walls, grey-tiled roofs, and horse-head gables. Traditional mortise-and-tenon logic is reinterpreted through modern construction techniques, balancing structural efficiency and aesthetic expression.

Spatial organization follows the principle of “adapting to local conditions and harmonizing with nature.” By integrating water features and public spaces, the design fosters dialogue between architecture, landscape, and culture. Ultimately, the project establishes a multifunctional cultural landmark that merges exhibition, leisure, education, and industrial revitalization, supporting sustainable regional development.
