Work in Progress
I was inspired by themes of transparency, flexibility, and explored inflatable forms in my spatial modifier experiements. These early investigations shaped the physical properties of the project, but also the theoretical position around openness and user agency in architecture. This proposal is a flexible fabrication centre and a community hub, an intervention that reimagines the business park as an open public space. ‘Work in Progress’ refers to multiple layers of the design’s intent.
Firstly, the building is transparent in both structure and purpose, using its exposed frame, visible services, and translucent canopy to reveal the processes happening within. By demystifying fabrication and construction, the project invites the surrounding community to witness, understand, and participate in the making of their built environment.
Secondly, the programme is purposely undefined. Organised around a flexible 6×6m grid system, the building includes large, open production halls and adaptable voids. These spaces allow the architecture to evolve in response to changing demands, accommodating everything from building component prefabrication to public events and exhibitions.
Finally, with ‘Work in Progress’ I wanted to create a model for a socially progressive development. Rather than dictating a set function, the building offers a framework for community led occupation where activity, and value are defined not by developers or architects, but by the people who use it.
