Community Engagement Centre, Sheffield
The "Community Engagement Centre" serves as a stepping stone for those who are struggling to find their place in the modern capitalist framework via job seeking help and other documentation help, as well as, a nursery space to provide childcare to those needing to find work before their children are of school age. The centre also provides a third space for the wider community with a kitchen and dining area, a multitude of seating, indoors and outdoors, and an adaptable co-works space. The combination of providing public-use areas for the wider community to use, on top of the services to help those in need of it, create a more welcoming environment, where people from a variety of backgrounds come to enjoy a space together. This is especially important as it can alleviate a good amount of the guilt that may follow those who are too afraid to reach out due to social stigma.
This welcoming environment is not only achieved through the spaces provided but also the very form the community centre takes. Through use of theories such as biophilia, the space takes on an organic and natural-feeling form which can promote feelings of comfort and well-being.
