What are the Flood-adaptive Landscapes?

The Potentials of Flood-Adaptive Landscapes: Designing a Real Site? What if we integrate real spaces with digital landscapes through VR and AR as potential tools to encourage participation, raise public awareness, and bridge the gap between architects, clients, policymakers, and users, especially in isolated communities.

Flooding is a major issue for residents near Lavington Avenue Playing Field, downstream of Chorlton Brook. The primary causes are extreme rainfall and human activities, with debris from upstream blocking culverts and causing overflow. A key strategy is to open up the existing, poorly managed river while visually and functionally engaging the local community. This encourages awareness, adaptation, and a shared sense of responsibility. The downstream design focuses on emergent flood protection to safeguard residents.

A website and immersive 3D experience are designed, allowing residents to understand flooding adaptations interactively during site visits or the pre-construction stage. This not only empowers communities but also strengthens funding efforts by visualising the project’s feasibility and impact.
