Portmanteau Urbanism | The Future of Work and Hybrid Living

The thesis develops a design methodology for an entrepreneurial creators’/creatives’ hybrid living district focused on growing and sustaining economic, social and environmental resilience in the face of the inevitable impacts of structural technological unemployment, brought about by the impending technological wave enabled by advancements in AI technologies as a general purpose technology.  The project explores how algorithmic design processes and developing computational tools can aid in understanding contextual layers of an existing site through a defined theoretical framework and how their interactions can potentially create organising principles for the design of a masterplan.

The proposed development is situated on an existing port typology, which calls for a change in function from infrastructural to a new form of hybrid living; One that blurs the lines between residential, commercial, community and infrastructural urban programming, that fosters an innovative and collaborative urban environment to address future emergent needs and demands, and meet the spatial requirements of an expanding localised creator/creative economy.
