Nimbyland

Nimbyland explores nimbyism [not-in-my-backyard-ism] and its impact on design. Where the current government has repeatedly asserted that they will not be entertaining nimbyism in a bid to meet housing targets and other infrastructure needs, this project imagines Sellafield as the future site of a New Town proposal, exploring whether nimbyism can be used as a design tool through a pro-development, satirical lens.

Looking to understand who the nimby is and exploring the factors that make the nimby, from overly identifying yourself withing a systemic issue, fear and misinformation, and the power normalisation holds over a person; how nimbyism operates in and around the current planning system; and finally proposing an alternative, experimental route for community engagement in planning, Nimbyland asserts that there is value in hearing what’s being said, demonstrates alternative options for all sides, and explores the unintended consequences of decisions.
