Connecting Crewe

My project focuses on the meaningful dialogue between the past and future of Crewe, creating spaces which celebrate industrial heritage whilst encouraging connections with the site, community and biodiversity. Drawing inspiration from local artist Harry Watson and his use of perspective, I have integrated his approaches into my design concepts and resolutions. Understanding the site through user experience with layered visuals and spatial narratives.

At the centre of my proposal is the retrofitting of the existing site buildings, whilst inspiring new forms through the heritage centre, cafe and workshop spaces. Supporting these elements is an elevated walkway system. Intended to integrate not just architectural responses, but experiential moments through reflection, interaction and discovery.

Sustainable practices embody the design, from recycled and locally sourced materials to water harvesting systems and living walls. Ensuring a minimal impact approach to my design, the elevated walkway acts to preserve the existing ground conditions and wildlife habitats, encouraging human and non-human cohabitation. Passive solutions work alongside mechanical systems to create comfortable, efficient and accessible spaces for a better user experience.

My project overall intends to create a site for heritage, education and socialisation, where people can gather and connect with their environment and one another. Ultimately, aiming to show the resilient and vibrant urban future of Crewe.
