Ming Chung
BA(Hons) Dip(Arch)UCL RIBA
Graduated from Manchester Polytechnic in 1992 and the Bartlett School of Architecture UCL in 1996. Ming is an ARB registered and RIBA Chartered Architect. She has particular experience in material fabrication and workshop practices supported by a London Arts Board Award in 1993.
Ming joined the MSA as a part-time Senior Lecturer in 2007 having combined practice and teaching at MMU and Liverpool JMU Universities from 1997.
Teaching and research interests focus on the process of making architecture and the poetics of the ordinary. Projects are developed through the observation of everyday urban conditions and the resourceful employment of readily available materials, with the aim to make the most from the least.
Ming Chung and Nick Tyson lead the BArch Unit: Prototype. The studio unit takes material as a primary resource from which to develop the possibilities of tectonic assembly and the exploration of architectural space. Experimental workshop processes are utilised to investigate ways in which ‘analogue’ hands-on making can inform the use of ‘digital’ contemporary technologies.
Following architectural practice in London, Chung Tyson Architects was established in Manchester 2001. Current work includes project management and hands-on small-scale construction projects. Projects are typically interdisciplinary in nature and are developed with interests in fabrication processes and material thrift.
Ming is a founder member of ‘team-bau’, a design led think-tank and research collective. Projects investigate the infrastructure of the contemporary recycled city, through international design competitions and development of collaborative external partnerships.

Reflective Room at The Manchester Museum
Reflective Room is a temporary structure located in the Courtyard at the Manchester Museum. It was selected as the winning design from the Prototype unit in a competition that invited 5th Year students from MSA to design an environment to align with the summer events programme 2010.
Reflective Room is formed by two interlocking L-shaped plywood elements forming a pair of benches with gradually sloping high backs. The structure is characterised by a combination of the use of contemporary machine tools and hands-on methods of assembly and construction.
