Nick Tyson
AA Dipl(Hons) Architect

Graduated from Manchester Polytechnic in 1992 and the Architectural Association, London in 1995, supported by an AA scholarship. He worked as a project architect in London, notably with Wright and Wright Architects between 1998-2001, before establishing Chung Tyson Architects in Manchester in 2001. He has taught studio at msa from 1998 and at UEL School of Architecture between 1996 and1998. He joined msa as a Senior Lecturer in 2003, and was appointed as Principal Lecturer in 2009. He has maintained an active connection with architectural practice through involvement with small built works and design competitions.

An integrated approach is taken to teaching, design research and architectural practice. This defines autonomous yet interdependent areas of work and offers potential for collaboration. Research activity mediates between these mutually supportive fields and is informed by a material practice that explores the connective possibilities of fabrication processes to speculative and made projects.

Nick Tyson and Ming Chung lead the BArch studio Prototype. The Studio takes material as a primary resource from which to develop the possibilities of tectonic assembly and the exploration of architectural space. Experimental workshop processes are utilised to explore ways in which analogue tools can inform the use of contemporary machine technologies.

Chung Tyson Architects projects include construction projects and speculative design competitions. Projects are typically interdisciplinary in nature and are developed with an interest in thrift: a reductive deployment of resources, energy, materials and fabrication methodologies. Works employ fabrication skills alongside design processes, providing a close connection between thinking and making.

Design research is also undertaken as as part of the research collective team bau. Projects investigate the strategic infrastructure of the contemporary city through international design competitions and the development of collaborative partnerships.

Projects

Reflective Room

'Reflective Room' is a temporary structure located in the Courtyard at The Manchester Museum. A large public room is formed by two interlocking plywood elements set within the exterior courtyard. The partially enclosed space and bench seat, along with fragmentary reflections, seek to bring the scale of the city to a human dimension. The structure is characterised by the use of contemporary machine tools and hands-on methods of construction. The Design Team from Prototype developed the project with Atelier One Engineers.
