Sir Nicholas Serota has been the Director of the Tate Gallery since 1988. He was previously Director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery (1976-88) and of the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (1973-76). His role is advisory and his appointment, like that of Peter Cooks, was to provide more input from the design world.
