Opera Houses

UNESCO World Heritage site, and known throughout the entire modern world, the Sydney Opera House is the project by which all "iconic" buildings are measured. It nevertheless has a long and troubled history, beginning in earnest in 1957 with the acceptance of the design of 2003 Pritzker Prize winner Jørn Utzon (1918-2008).

Following several years of productive and creative work, political wrangling and interference wrested Danish architect Jørn Utzon from his proper place, and large parts of the interior were subsequently undertaken by local architects. Thirty years after his resignation from the project, Utzon and his son undertook commisions to redesign parts of the interior that would be more in accordance with the original design. In its present state of evolution, the Sydney Opera House still represents one of the most audacious undertakings in modern architecture, and plays a large role in promoting Sydney and Australia throughout the world.
